Brent Hocking is an award-winning wine and spirits producer known for his unconventional “luxury with an edge” approach to branding and product development, the inspiration for which is drawn from his passion for music, fashion, and design.
Hocking founded ultra-premium spirits brand DeLeón Tequila in 2009, forever changing the landscape of barrel aging in tequila by utilizing French Sauternes Barrels instead of caramel flavoring. He is credited with pioneering “a whole new class of tequila.”
Hocking received Robb Report’s “Spirit of the Year” award three years in a row – the only person in the 25-year history of the magazine to achieve this. He also won the top five industry awards, five consecutive years, for five different tequilas under the DeLeón label. He was named Back-to-Back Grand Champion at the World Beverage Competition in Geneva, Switzerland two years in a row, before selling DeLeón to Diageo PLC in 2013.
In 2016, Hocking created and launched Virginia Black Decadent American Whiskey, a joint venture with artist-performer Drake. Hocking uniquely positioned the Virginia Black brand to captivate a demographic never before seen in the category, successfully broadening the scale and appeal of brown spirits and whiskey in general.
Virginia Black quickly garnered a reputation as the smoothest whiskey on the market, voted Top 5 Spirits of 2016 Virginia Black earned a 91-Point Rating in Wine Enthusiast – surpassing competitive brands Jack Daniel’s, Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark in flavor profile ratings, even outscoring aficionado favored High West “Bourye” acquired by Constellation Brands for $160 million in 2016.
Recognized for his exquisite palate and decades-long career tasting the world’s most celebrated wine and Champagnes, Hocking selected Mod Sélection as the finest house in the Champagne region. He partnered with the production House and spent years bringing the Mod Sélection label to market.
Mod Sélection Réserve and Mod Sélection Rosé are the first of ten intricately crafted releases under the label, ranging from Non-Vintage to Vintage, Rosé de Saignée, Vintage Rosé de Saignée, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Vintage Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs and Single Vineyard, Estate-Grown Tete de Cuveé.
